World Economic Forum rates Canadian banks as the world’s soundest

Sunday, September 12th, 2010

Reported by: Eric CRWE Newswire Middle East correspondent

Canada’s banks are the world’s soundest banks according to the World Economic Forum. Canadian banks have consecutively earned that title for the past three years.

Jim Flaherty Canada’s Finance Minister commented, “Regulation alone is not necessarily the answer to the problem. Most of the institutions that failed were regulated. The key is effective supervision, today’s ranking by the World Economic Forum is further evidence that Canada’s model does work and is an example to the world.”

The United States was far from making any example except in how not to operate a banking system we came in 111th, and unlike the United States, banks in Canada weren’t offered bailouts during the 2007-2008 financial turmoil.

The World Economic Forum ranked a total of 139 countries world wide in over 100 indicators.

Though Canada was at the top in bank soundness it declined to 10th from 9th ranking in global competitiveness.

Canada ranked 22nd in securities and exchange regulations, 14th with respect to affordable financial services, 24th in customer friendly financing procedures and 39th in restriction over capital flows.

In other indicators Canada has a total population of 33.6 million which is twice that of the Netherlands whereas it’s gross domestic product per capita is $39,669 as compared $48,223 in the Netherlands.

JP Morgan announces its second quarter results

Saturday, July 17th, 2010

By Mike Zaman

JP Morgan Chase & Co announced its second quarter financial results and reported 77 percent increase in its profit to $4.8 billion. The bank earned $2.7 billion more as compared to same quarter last year due to a recovery of losses from failed advances.

Jamie Dimon CEO JP Morgan Chase & Co disclosed that the bank has reduced their reserves by $1.5 billion to cover its extreme high level of loan losses

JP Morgan Chase is the first to announce its financial results for the second quarter of this year. The announced results surpassed all the Analysts forecasts. Experts expected earnings per share of $0.67 for the second quarter however JP Moran reported the earning per share of $2.7 which is $0.28 higher from a year earlier.

Dimon Stated “It is too early to say how much improvement we will see from here.” Banks are being very cautious in reporting the recovery of failed loans, since the 2008 financial crisis economists and investors are looking at the loan level of banks as a key indicator of a recovery.

JP Morgan on the other hand cannot be categorized in the same category where recovery in loan losses is being taken as signs of an economic recovery as it remained strong even during the liquidity crunch and financial recession.

A strong investment banking division is the reason attributed for JP Morgan to recover its losses from its consumer financing. However revenue from investment banking operations also fell by 6 percent to $1.4 billion due to our low performing stock markets.
