The authorities in Moscow are preparing a ban on the sale of strong alcohol from late night 2 pm to morning at 10 am. The Ban is to address one of the city’s one million greatest scourges drinking.
According to Russian press reports, Moscow’s mayor, Yuri Lusjkov, signed a decree to take affect from the first of September prohibiting the sale of goods from 2 pm to 10 am.
It is intended to prevent the Muscovites from buying strong spirits such as vodka during the dark hours, but it will be possible to buy beer and wine.
The ban is an attempt to tackle one of Russia’s major problems, namely the ingestion of too much alcohol.
Russia earlier this summer implemented a zero tolerance ban on drinking and driving, passed by parliament after President Dmitry Medvedev said that Russians could not to be trusted when drinking.
Multinational corporations of drinks such as Carlsberg, SABMiller, Anheuser-Busch InBev and others controls more than 95 percent of the domestic market, one of the world’s largest.
Alcohol abuse costs an estimated half a million Russians their lives every year and alcohol has a major influence on Russian life expectancy.
