Plastic Boast Arrives in Sydney, Australia

A boat named “Plastiki,” denoting that was built from recycled plastic, successfully docked in Sydney on July 26, having set sail from San Francisco on March 20.
The mission of the 60-foot vessel was to create awareness of the fact that recycling turns “trash” into useful material. “Plastiki” was formed by 12,500 recycled plastic bottles that were glued together with sugar cane and powered by solar panels and windmills.
The skipper of the boat, David de Rothschild, 31, said that he was motivated to build the boat after reading the 2006 United Nations report, in which it was mentioned that pollution, in particular plastic waste, threatened the world’s oceans.
De Rothschild and the other crew members received a warm welcome from U.S. Ambassador Jeffrey Bleich and hundreds of well-wishers upon reaching Sydney. Bleich proclaimed in excitement, “A journey from trash to triumph.”
According to de Rothschild, the boat encountered fierce storms during the 8,000-mile trip. “Plastiki” emerged unscathed, proving that plastic is strong enough to withstand storms.
