Chavez Severs Ties with Colombia

Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez has severed relations with US ally Colombia. The severance of ties was followed by Colombian accusations that Chavez harbored leftist Colombian rebels. Chaves has dismissed these accusation as `a hoax` and pretext for a possible US-backed invasion of his oil-producing country.
The Venezuelan government has repeatedly rejected photos, videos, and maps presented by Colombia to the Organization of American States to back its charges that Colombian guerillas operate from camps inside Venezuela.
Chavez said `all this hoax that here in Venezuela there are I don’t know how many thousands of terrorists…this lie is a perfect excuse to attempt an invasion of Venezuela`. `Such an attack would trigger a `100-year war`, adding `may God protect us from such a war`.
The socialist Venezuelan leader condemned the government of outgoing Colombian President Avaro Uribe as `an instrument of (US) imperialism`.
Addressing a meeting in Caracas of trade unionists from the Americas, Chavez said the US was targeting his revolutionary rule over top South American crude producer Venezuela, which is a leading supplier of oil to USA.
He said `Now Colombia is a great big Yankee base`. He was referring to a deal last year that allows US forces the use of Colombian military bases. Chavez said the pact poses a direct threat to his country.
