Reported By: Soha CRWE Newswire Middle East correspondent
Four Kurdish rebels have been killed in clashes with Turkish troops. One Turkish soldier was also killed in the fighting that took place in the southeast part of the country.
A statement from the governor’s office in Anatolia said `two women were among the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) militants killed in clashes in Hakkari province, near the Iraqi border`.
`The operation is continuing`, the statement added.
The Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) has been fighting for an independent state. It has been declared a terrorist organization both by Turkey and the USA. PKK started armed its struggle in 1984 and so far 45,000 people have lost their lives in the conflict.
Kurds are in the majority in northern Iraq. Kurds are also in a majority in southeast of Turkey bordering Iraq.
PKK announced a ceasefire in honor of the holy month of Ramadan from Aug 13 to September 20. However the Turkish government has rejected the ceasefires in the past saying a ceasefire requires involvement of two legal parties which PKK isn’t.
